How to reduce Deforestation in Amazonia

Gilberto Câmara is a researcher on Geoinformatics. Gilberto is one of the leaders on the global effort for making Earth Observation data openly accessible. He was director of Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) from 2006 to 2012, where he lead a team of scientists to develop new ways of fighting deforestation in the Amazon rain forest. INPE’s team achieved big advances, supported by total information transparency. The leading scientific journal Nature called the reduction in deforestation in Amazonia to be “the biggest environmental success story in decades”. At TEDxMünster Gilberto Câmara will talk about the most recent success to reduce forest loss in Amazonia by 80% percent and how Brazilian institutions changed to respond to national and international pressure by public opinion to take effective action for environmental protection. The talk will also discuss the role of Science and scientists to bring about change in Brazil and highlight why efficient institutions are the key to long-term progress in developing nations. – Talk in English
